School holidays are one of the most eagerly anticipated and enjoyable moments in our lives, particularly for pupils and those working in the education sector. This joy stems not only from being temporarily freed from the grind of academic routines, but also from having the space to breathe. We finally have the chance to relax, explore new things, or simply enjoy a good night’s sleep without worrying about being woken by the morning alarm.
But have you ever stopped to think? It turns out that ‘holidays’ are closely linked to spiritual and theological dimensions that can refresh our faith. There are several aspects we can explore during this holiday period, which we can reflect upon deeply.
Mending Strained Relationships Due to Routine (Parenting)
Holidays are a golden time (golden time) for families to rebuild bridges of communication that may have become strained due to routine. Here, we can do many things, such as playing, enjoying leisure activities, and even creating new things together, over a longer period than before. These simple moments can actually enhance the quality of family relationships.
Psychologically, various studies on Family Bonding show that active leisure time together can reduce stress in children and enhance their emotional sense of security, which strengthens their resilience in coping with their daily routines.
Learning from Kohelet: Life is “Meaningless”, So Go on Holiday
Ecclesiastes teaches that this wisdom stems from a critical examination of the realities of life, leading to the conclusion that everything is “meaningless”. One famous analogy is “catching the wind”. The meaning of this ‘vanity’ is expanded to encompass two main aspects:
- Transience (Temporality): Life is temporary and fleeting, so human understanding and dreams will never be fully realised.
- Absurdity (Contradiction): There are things that run counter to one’s beliefs or prayers as they manifest in reality, meaning that life cannot be fully predicted or defined.
In the context of Kohelet, leisure is closely linked to spiritual practice as an effort to create a break from the energy-sapping routine of daily life. Etymologically, this leisure time is referred to as schola (school), meaning an opportunity to learn new things without being burdened by pressure, ambition or stress.
Therefore, the act of taking a holiday is truly carried out well and wholeheartedly (mindfulness). This is a reflection of God’s gracious gift, allowing humanity to enjoy these moments of respite. In the tradition of spiritual thought, the Sabbath is further described as a moment when eternity is made present. Through the sincere observance of the Sabbath, the faithful have the freedom to enjoy moments of happiness, fellowship, and to celebrate the joy of salvation. Embracing the value of the Sabbath serves as an antithesis to the mentality of racing to pursue extreme piety or fleeting material wealth.
