THE LETTER OF JUDAS: IS IT TOO VAGUE FOR US TO INTERPRET?

The Letter of Jude is one of the shorter letters in the New Testament consisting of only 25 verses and comes right before the Book of Revelation. Despite its brevity, it has many deep theological, historical, and hermeneutical layers. One of the uniqueness of this letter is its reference to non-canonical Jewish literature such as the Book of Enoch and the Testament of Moses.

Historical and Theological Context

The Epistle of Jude emerged in the context of the early church which was facing internal challenges, especially the influx of deviant teachings that were contrary to Judeo-Christian ethical values. The author appears to have a strong Jewish background, as evidenced by his understanding of Jewish literature such as the Book of Enoch and the Testament of Moses. The reference to Michael and his quarrel with Satan over the corpse of Moses (Jude 1:9) is not found in the canonical books of the Old Testament, but is known in the reading tradition of the people of that time. This suggests that the epistle was written in a time when the canon of scripture was not yet fully established and was still open to various forms of literary authority that were considered sacred by a particular community.

Ethical Problems and Moral Deviations

The Epistle of Jude 1:4 gives the main background to the writing of the epistle, “For there are certain men who have infiltrated your midst, men who were long ago condemned. They are ungodly men who abuse the grace of our God to fulfill their lusts, and deny our only Lord and Master Jesus Christ. During that time, there was an infiltration of ungodly men who abused the grace of God to fulfill their lusts. The author responds strongly to this issue, pointing out that such heresies are not only theological errors, but also moral aberrations that endanger the community. The misuse of God's grace as a justification for immoral acts, especially in terms of sexual behavior, is considered a form of blasphemy against salvation in Christ.

Hermeneutics and Canonization

The use of non-canonical literature in the epistle of Jude raises debates surrounding its status in the Christian canon. In the history of the church, the recognition of a writing as canonical was often based on the authority of its users in the community of faith and not merely on its compatibility with other documents. Therefore, even though the Book of Enoch and the Testament of Moses are not in the canon, their use in this letter shows that they once had authority in the early Christian community.

Stern yet Compassionate Shepherd's Voice

Although the tone of this letter is stern and harsh against the propagators of heresy, the author still shows his pastoral side. In Jude 1:21–22, the author urges the congregation to nurture themselves in the love of God and show mercy to those who doubt. This shows the balance between ecclesiastical discipline and pastoral love.

The letter of Jude makes an important contribution to understanding the dynamics of the early church, especially in terms of challenges to the purity of doctrine and morality of the people. The use of non-canonical literature demonstrates the diversity of sources of authority in the early Christian community, before final canonization took place. As such, the letter remains relevant as a warning against moral and theological aberrations, as well as a call to maintain faith and love in the midst of a complex world.

How can the message of the Letter of Jude be applied in maintaining the purity of faith and ethics in today's Christian community?
