God's help often goes beyond the limited ways of human thinking. Therefore, in every challenge and struggle that we face, remain steadfast in faith in Him and open to all possibilities of the vastness of His work. He works through all means, even through ordinary things that we always experience.
Who would have thought that God would use a king from a foreign land to return the Israelites from Babylon to their country? In the first year of the reign of Cyrus, king of Persia, God moved Cyrus' heart to issue a decree that allowed the Israelites to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple (Ezra 1:1). This decree fulfilled the prophecy delivered by the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 25:8-13; 29:10-14). As a Persian king, Cyrus was also known to respect 'local religions'. Existing archaeological evidence records Cyrus' efforts to restore the holy cities and support various local beliefs. This shows that God worked through Cyrus' policies to bless His people.
He declared that the Lord, the God of heaven, had given him the kingdoms of the earth and commanded him to build His temple in Jerusalem. He invited all of God’s people to return to Jerusalem and instructed those who remained to provide support with silver, gold, goods, and freewill offerings. Now God’s people were not only returning to their homeland but were also directed to rebuild the center of their worship, the temple. This shows how God prioritized spiritual relationships with His people in the restoration process.
The book of Ezra also records that Cyrus returned the furnishings of the Temple, which had been taken by Nebuchadnezzar during the conquest of Jerusalem. These items, including the gold cups and silver cups, were returned to God’s people through their leader, Sheshbazzar (Ezra 1:7-11). Although some important items such as the ark of the covenant are not mentioned, the return of these items symbolizes the restoration of worship in Jerusalem. This shows that even though God’s people had been in exile for so long, God had not forgotten their heritage and was restoring the honor of His temple.
Bible friends, the story in Ezra chapter one shows that the restoration of God's people came entirely from God's initiative and faithfulness. God was sovereign to use a foreign king to carry out His plan, fulfill the prophecies of the prophets, and restore His people from exile. Although the people who returned to Jerusalem would face many challenges, they were strengthened by events that proved the faith they had maintained all this time. Therefore, no matter what happens in our lives, God remains in control of history and is always faithful to His promises.
