Don't Stop Hoping

Hope often emerges most clearly when all avenues of escape seem dead-end, when struggles seem to leave no room. But on the other hand, fear and loneliness are also very real, especially when we feel like we are standing alone, going against the flow just to proclaim the truth. This is what the psalmist experienced: he was surrounded by a shrewd, hidden, and united enemy united to bring him down.

Psalm 64 begins with an urgent cry to God, "O God, hear the voice of my groaning; guard my life against the fierce enemy" (verses 1-2). The psalmist faces an enemy who uses his tongue like a sword and his words are described as arrows. It shows the tension between the weak and the strong, between the threatened and the threatening. This psalm was probably written when David faced enemy pressure, both while fleeing from Saul and during the rebellion. The psalmist's experience resembles the social pressure or toxic environment that we experience today. Hurtful words can cause anxiety, undermine our confidence, or make us feel isolated. However, this Psalm teaches us that hope should not be extinguished. God is present as an inner sanctuary, upholding justice, and providing the strength to endure when we face injustice.

Friends of the Bible, we are reminded to continue to nurture hope and not give up the fight, even though the world often feels unfair. Believe that every word and deed will be held accountable, including sharp words or malicious intent toward others. God's position is clear that He will defend the weak. Perhaps many of us are currently experiencing pressure from our surroundings. Not because they are wrong, but because the principles and values that we uphold as Christians are often different from the values and perspectives of the world. So let us keep our hearts straight, be steadfast in prayer, guard every word, and live out the love and integrity of faith. Believe that God's help will come in due time, for that is where hope in Him lies.
