Repentance and loyalty to God is not a necessity. Rather, it is an inner brush and commitment that sinners must strive and fight for. The firm commitment to repent often comes through memories of unpleasant events and even mistakes in the past. But on the one hand, we are led to see that behind all these mistakes, there is a God who is waiting and embracing us in His love.
The Psalmist invites the people to remember the sins of their ancestors. Not to blame or accuse, but to encourage repentance and faithfulness to God. Through the wounds of the past, the people are invited to see that even though they have been unfaithful to God, God still reveals His steadfast love.
Even the most fatal mistake is mentioned by the psalmist when Israel worships Ba'al Peor (v.28). Ba’al Peor literally means Ba’al (Canaanite/Moabite fertility god) who was worshipped in Peor, a mountain/region in the region of Moab. The worship of Ba’al Peor was followed by adultery with Moabite women. As a result, God's wrath was aroused and God's punishment came upon them. Israel did an abominable thing to God. By reiterating the event in verse 28, the entire nation is reminded not to fall into the same mistake.
When we look closely at this passage, we should be moved to repent and come back to God. In the past we may have done wrong and sinned before Him. Make the memory of these dark events a milestone not to repeat the same mistakes. God is waiting for our confession and repentance. From there comes true restoration based on the love and grace of God.
