Anti-Tyrant Manifesto

Power can be a blessing to many, but it can also turn into an oppressive burden. The difference lies not in the amount of power possessed, but in the wisdom that leads it. The book of Proverbs reminds us that when wisdom is missing from the heart of a leader, power can easily turn into tyranny.

Proverbs describes an oppressive ruler as a leader "without understanding" (v. 16). The inability to understand justice is not just a moral weakness, but also blindness in seeing reality clearly. Without wisdom, power loses its way and is easily moved by greed. Proverbs therefore affirms that those who hate unlawful gain will live long. Integrity is not just a matter of personal piety, but the foundation for sustainable leadership.

This section also warns about the temptation of shortcuts. Those who rush after wealth often do not realise that poverty is waiting behind their steps (vv. 19-22). In such an environment, flattery and pretence easily flourish. Wisdom, however, honours those who dare to give honest rebuke, for truth is more valuable than words that merely please the ear. In addition, the writer of Proverbs also reminds us that injustice often stems from a heart that trusts blindly in itself. People who rely solely on their desires are easily trapped in greed and dishonesty. In contrast, those who walk in God's wisdom learn to live with honesty and care for others, including the weak and poor (v. 27).

Friends of the Bible, resistance to tyranny doesn't always begin on the stage of power. It can begin with a simple decision to live righteously before God. When people choose integrity, justice, and generosity, the seeds of tyranny have no place to grow. For where God's wisdom leads, power no longer oppresses, but brings life.
