Have you ever wondered about the actions of the corrupt? Most of these people are well-educated and have lived well through their labour. But why is it as if there is never enough for them. Always looking for ways to get more even by breaking the law. Perhaps the problem is not what they already have, but the inability of these people to say "enough".
This is what our reading also highlights. Ecclesiastes sees a world full of oppression from those in power against the poor. The rape of law and justice is a daily reality. He sees these real phenomena as a result of man's love for something that is actually futile, namely possessions and their various forms. In the end one is trapped in the relentless pursuit of possessions and wealth. The human mind becomes distorted to such an extent that it is willing to take advantage of others for personal gain. On the other hand, never-ending fatigue becomes a part of self-existence. We are trapped in the fear of lack and never having enough. There is always room for more, and no room for enough. People who love money will never be satisfied.
The preacher offers an interesting way of redemption, which is to be content and enjoy everything that has been produced through human labour. He says, "Behold, I count it good and fitting for a man to eat and drink, and to take pleasure in the labour of his life under the sun, which God hath given him: for this is his portion." Then he goes on to invite us to enjoy the treasures and riches with which God has blessed us. What a simple piece of advice that we often forget. Enjoy what Allah has given us. No matter how much it is, enjoy it well. Then there will come a sense of sufficiency from that action.
The preacher's advice cuts right through the irony of the modern world. People are drifting and even losing a lot of time because of their work. Work is no longer for life, but life for work. We are bombarded with various offers that always fill the space of human desire. So modern humans easily fall into a sense of never having enough. We forget to learn to enjoy and be grateful for what we have and have been given by God. Stop and slow down for a moment, give your mind and body time to digest, see, hear, and enjoy what He has given you. Slowly but surely, your heart will swell with gratitude, for it seems that God has never stopped caring for us.
