Between Wisdom and Ignorance

Often in our daily lives, we identify ignorance with cognitive issues only. Unlike the tradition in wisdom literature, folly is much broader than cognitive matters. It encompasses human ignorance when making decisions, disregarding upbringing, and taking things for granted. Those who are foolish are those who have never learnt from their past life situations and the mistakes they have made. It is the category of fools in wisdom literature that is actually more dangerous. It touches the essence of everyday human life.

In our reading, the preacher again reminds the reader of the role of wisdom in life. A good name is better than costly oil, and the day of death is better than the day of birth. He invites us not to always get caught up in what is visible. Instead, the most important thing is consistency when doing good in life, so that later when death approaches, our goodness will still be talked about. A good reputation is the result of exemplary wisdom, which is described as the ability to choose what is right. He lives life with wisdom, while welcoming the death that will surely come. Thus, the wise man knows that there is a limit to everything.

The lives of those who are wise are juxtaposed with those of fools. They are so quick to speak up and express opinions that have no meaning at all (v. 5). Foolishness is also evident from their mindset that considers that "wisdom" can be obtained easily, even with bribes or possessions that they think can buy everything (vv. 6-7). So live a life of wisdom gained through perseverance. It will transform you into a patient person who is able to control his anger, unlike the foolish person who is overcome with pride and anger.

Bible friends, a life of wisdom is not easy and cannot be obtained instantly. But at least when we are truly committed to living a life in His wisdom, then we know that it is a long process. One thing that distinguishes those who are wise from those who are foolish is the ability to process all events as a process of upbringing from God. Living wisely is also shown in the way we think, speak, and act. Learning to digest all events with a cool head, instead of responding without any thought and only prioritising emotions.

Wise living is also shown in the way we think, speak and act.
