Manifestations of love can take many forms. Sometimes it takes the form of a gentle, affectionate greeting, but it is not uncommon for love to be expressed through the restrictions or firm words we direct at others. Take, for example, the way parents love their children: this is expressed not only in a warm embrace every morning but also in the rule against coming home too late. That is how God loves us. Sometimes His love is manifested in discipline that is so strict it startles us.
This is what Jeremiah seeks to re-emphasise in the passage we have read. The exile of part of the people of Judah to the land of Babylon and the defeat of the Kingdom of Judah were facts that were truly heart-wrenching. Fear and weeping spread throughout the land. It was as though they were suffering from an incurable wound. From a human perspective, we might say that Judah was beyond help. Yet through the prophecies of the Prophet Jeremiah, we see that God emphatically declares that it is precisely from this state of helplessness that He will come to their aid. His grace felt ever more real.
Moreover, the Lord reminded them that what the nation was experiencing was a consequence of their past disobedience. Thus, what was happening at that time was also part of God’s wisdom and providence. Moreover, amidst all that suffering, God never abandoned them, and restoration would eventually come. The exile was like a refining furnace that would purify God’s chosen people.
Dear Friends of the Bible, when life’s challenges and struggles arise, that is actually the right time for us to draw closer to God and seek His wisdom and guidance. Perhaps He is teaching us to be patient, or calling us to surrender more fully to Him. Whatever message emerges through the struggles and challenges we face can only be understood when our hearts truly surrender and return to the Lord. For at the heart of every word God speaks to His children, there is always a promise of restoration: that we will not be forsaken, and that even the “most severe wounds” will find healing in Him.
