Uncertainty is something that causes people anxiety. Is this not reflected in the small events that occur in our lives? From the anxiety of waiting for someone, awaiting news, or other such things. Thus, instinctively, people act and behave in ways that enable them to anticipate the uncertainties that may arise in their lives.
In the passage we are reading today, the Edomites built their defences within the crevices of the rocky hills. The geographical location of their capital was surrounded by steep cliffs, making it impossible for enemy forces to penetrate. Furthermore, this nation took great pride in possessing people who were experts in their fields and wise men. Once again, we see a similar pattern among nations that were subsequently punished by God. Ammon was no exception. It became arrogant because of all its wealth. It was this very arrogance that led them to plunder the cities of the Gadites, one of the tribes of Israel. Ultimately, God brought judgement upon both nations so that they might repent and turn away from the arrogance they had built up over the years.
Several passages preceding chapter 49 also frequently describe the downfall of nations due to their pride. This serves as a very stark reminder for our lives of faith that God does not approve of pride, for in such an attitude lies a sense of not needing Him. Repent and return to the Lord by worshipping Him in humility. That is the calling of our life of faith.
