Amidst the realities of today’s world, we are often confronted with modern-day ‘Babels’—oppressive worldly systems, social injustice, crises that seem too great to overcome, or even the sins and bad habits that shackle our lives. Amidst all the world’s struggles, does God still care for us? It is this dilemma that our passage today seeks to address. Through His prophet, God declares the downfall of Babylon and all its gods (Bel and Merodach). No matter how great an empire’s power may be, it will crumble when confronted with God’s justice. This message reminds us that no suffering is in vain.
On the one hand, those who are pleasing to Him are lifted up and regarded with love. The Lord also looks upon and embraces us at this very moment. What He desires is for us to turn to Him with a broken heart and repent, whilst recalling the bonds of His covenant of love. His greatest promise is written in verse 20: ‘People will seek out the faults of Israel, but there will be none… for I will forgive those whom I have left alive.’
In our life of faith, His love and grace often take such a prominent place. There is nothing wrong with this, but we must also remember that a holy life is something He desires. Therefore, our understanding of God’s love and justice must go hand in hand.
Let us look to the future together with the Lord, who is the source of life.
