Where Is Your Heart?

Where Is Your Heart?

Greed has long been a plague that undermines the sustainability of the world. A wise saying once said that the earth is indeed enough for the needs of all humans, but never enough for human greed. So, how can we improve this condition? One of the most important things we can do is change our perspective on wealth, riches, and ownership. Greed is often driven by a human mindset that focuses on material things as the only goal of life. As if this heart only leads to that without anything else. So we should start our reflection now by asking, "where is my heart?"

This reflective question is based on Jesus' statement regarding the symptoms of greed and someone's focus on wealth and possessions. He said, "Where your heart is, there your heart will be also." One thing we need to realize is that our passage this time is not intended to describe Jesus as being against wealth, but what He taught was an excessive perspective on wealth. When He said “do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth” He meant an excessive focus on wealth. Moths that will destroy or thieves who will break in and destroy wealth refer to an attitude of collecting as much wealth as possible for oneself as a provision for the future excessively. In the end, many things can take away that wealth. That is the reward of greed. Does that mean we should not save, invest, and prepare for the future? Of course it is because what God is talking about in this passage is the right perspective on wealth and good stewardship. Basically, everything in the universe belongs to God alone. So the perspective and management of wealth are under God’s sovereignty. This means that having the right perspective on wealth and realizing good stewardship over it is something very spiritual. God then continued His teaching by challenging the disciples to choose their master. The word “master” reflects a figure who is powerful and is obeyed absolutely by someone. Like a servant who is totally devoted to one master. The choice is to fully serve God and follow all of His decrees including in viewing wealth, or follow Mammon (the god of money, a symbol of wealth and greed). The first choice leads to eternity, while the second choice leads to destruction.

We must realize that in this era the challenge to change our perspective on wealth according to His perspective is very difficult. Often humans are only seen as consumers who must shop as much as possible. With the help of artificial intelligence, social media suggests the most contemporary ways of life personally to each person with all its glitter. We are encouraged to continue buying and owning, without having time to ask whether what we buy is really what we need. It encourages us to continue buying and buying, so that we unknowingly make wealth the only goal of life. Hopefully, God's word this time will succeed in restoring our awareness of the true purpose of life, namely to glorify God and make Him the only goal in life. Wealth is not a goal but a means to glorify Him. With this perspective, we are able to feel “enough” with what we have and avoid destructive greed.
