The human way of understanding and reflecting on the existence of God is a mystery of life that goes on throughout history. We recognize our human existence as a finite creation and thus confront the Infinite God who is the creator of all things. The Israelites of old developed a wisdom tradition or literature in their reflection on God. Wisdom was seen as something inherent with God and co-creative with Him from the beginning. In wisdom literature there is a process of personification of wisdom that places it as if it were a subject. Thus, the pattern of personal relationship that is to be promoted in the religiosity of the Jews is evident.
Chapter 28:1-21 talks about wisdom that is so difficult to find. The struggle is like walking along the sides of the earth but still not finding Wisdom. Even in destruction and death, a description of an incomprehensible world. Wisdom is also nowhere to be found, only rumors and doubts. Indeed, wisdom is far from man and is not reached or known. Yet God knows the way to it, and He knows its dwelling place. From the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, and He saw them: He looked to the ends of the earth that He was forming and saw everything under the heavens; at that time He determined the strength of the wind and regulated the amount of water. He made a decree for the rain and a path for the lightning. There wisdom is present, God sees it, then reckons and proclaims it, decrees it, and investigates it.
Wisdom is with God in the work of shaping the world and wisdom is directed toward God and surrenders itself to Him. Job continues the tradition in the Book of Proverbs that places Wisdom as His creation and with Him always. Thus, it should be a necessity for man to submit to His will. Fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. Honoring God and placing Him as the sole determinant of our lives. Human freedom must be directed in the honor and fear of God. Thus man avoids the desire to be directed by his own thoughts alone.
Friends of the Bible, let us submit ourselves to His love, power, and will alone. Recognizing His wisdom is sometimes so difficult, especially when faced with a variety of choices that stretch. In difficulties, let us always draw closer in a true and complete relationship with Him. Only God is the source of our help. His wisdom brings peace and serenity as we go through life.
