Remembering the Good

Human memory is far more powerful than we can imagine. Certain events in the past can be experienced vividly with a detailed recollection of what happened. One of the most heartwarming things to remember is past events that pleased us. It might be a success/achievement in life, a precious moment with a loved one, and various other memorable moments. Imagine if the presence of these memories also reminded us of God's goodness, enabling us to face the present in faith in Him.

This is what happened to Job as described in Chapter 29. A poetic picture of a righteous man who experienced the fullness of God's blessings. After a long and contentious debate between Job and his friends without any common ground, Job reflects on his life. If today's suffering is so severe, there was a time when life was good and full of joy. This is not to boast but to show that we are God's people who strive to live in God's righteousness and justice.

Job opens the poem with memories of a glorious past. The months and days were bright because God protected him. His presence shone like a lamp in the dark and Job could walk in His light so that he felt calm, happy, and secure. In his prime, or rather when he was young, Job experienced close association with God. He was surrounded by a burning passion to go on and do things in life.

Those glorious times were also marked by Job's participation in plans concerning the local community. Of course, this happened because of God's provision alone. Job could act well because the One in power was with him. Whatever Job's achievements and circumstances in the past were always attributed to the presence of God who was close to Him and accompanied Job.

Friends of the Bible, from this passage we learn that memories of good events in the past must be reflected in God's will and His presence alone. The memories of those good events will empower the present, because even though life is not as glorious as the past, we always have hope because God is always with us. May God strengthen us always in every walk of life that we are living.
