The relationship between two subjects presupposes an independent existence but there is a relationship of mutual influence between them. For example, when our friend complains and is sad, we are also affected by his emotions and feel the same sadness. That is empathy in a relationship. The relationship between God and man seems to be in a similar spectrum. God places His creation as autonomous subjects and respects human existence as a whole. He gives space for humans to be honest with themselves, especially when faced with various challenges in life.
The various poems in the book of Psalms reveal these dynamics so that we find poems that express the joy and gratitude of God's people, but there are also complaints to God for the crush of life that is being experienced. Psalm 5 expresses the psalmist's firm belief in the existence of a just God. Therefore, in the distress and hardship of his enemies, the psalmist always appreciates God's provision which is built on His justice. That confidence is seen in verse 5, "For you are not a God who delights in ungodliness; the wicked will not rest in you." Those who indulge in sin and do unrighteousness have no place in His presence.
This is in stark contrast to the righteous who constantly orient themselves toward His will. They are like people who have found the right refuge. The cheering of His people comes from the realization that God will always bless the righteous (verse 13). Thus, all the complaints due to the enemies that undermine and the injustice that the world presents, are answered by the psalmist himself that God always shelters the righteous who take refuge in Him. It is in that confidence that one can gain strength and anchor his hope.
Friends of the Bible, it is time for us to reflect on the struggles of our lives. When problem after problem comes, or even when injustice arises, we may feel the weight and crush that is so excruciating. Unconsciously, complaints are uttered from our lips and hearts addressed to Him. That is a sign of the honesty of our hearts. But from that fragility, Allah never remains silent as long as we always put our hope in Him. Remember He is the Most Just who sees the complaints of His people. We can feel all of this when our hearts are focused on Him and we live in a right relationship with Him.
