We often hear the concept of man seeking "God's favor" or becoming pleasing to God, where does this understanding come from? In the Old Testament we see a concept of divinity where God introduces Himself as the Most Holy Creator, the Creator of the Universe. He establishes a covenant with His people, whereby the people in the covenant are to worship God at all times. The worship of the Most Holy God takes place in the holiness of man which occurs through submission to Him and obeying His commands. Therefore, everyone who worships Him is invited to live pleasing to Him by striving for holiness of life.
The interesting concept of holiness in the old testament is not only related to ritualistic piety achieved through personal worship and adoration of God. Holiness also happens by realizing a good life in relationship with others and the rest of creation. This is seen through our reading this time. God the King of Glory can only be worshipped by those who have clean hands, pure hearts, do not give themselves over to deception, and do not swear falsely. In other words, the King demands integrity from His people in order for them to please God.
Imagine this in the context of protocol when meeting with a head of state. If usually the protocol is to meet with matters of formality, this is not the case when it comes to pleasing God. It demands change and true piety from people. Being honest, not swearing falsely, doing good, are all results of submission to God. Simply put, if God loves justice and honesty then it is only fitting that God's followers do the same. Isn't this what our nation needs? A strong sense of divinity and religiosity of this nation, strengthened by a strong sense of justice and a strong struggle to maintain integrity.
