As believers, we realize that God alone is our source of help and protection. However, often when problems or struggles occur, there seems to be a hesitation to call out to Him and ask for help with all our hearts. Whereas our faith belief that God will help should be realized through tangible acts of faith through prayers and calls to Him that express that belief.
That is the nuance that the psalmist shows in the passage we read today. The psalmist cries out to God. He envisions the Creator as his rock. By referring to God as the Rock, he affirms that the one he worships is a strong and sturdy God who always provides refuge to those who take refuge in Him. God may seem silent at the moment, but the psalmist is confident that it is not forever.
Therefore the psalmist continues his plea for help. The one thing he wanted was for God to keep him from the wicked and those who do evil. He did not want to be dragged into the activities of the wicked. It is precisely the chastisement of those who do evil that the Psalmist asks for and longs for. The poem then ends with an expression of gratitude that God has heard his request. That is the reason for his joy.
Friends of the Bible, may we also be enabled to always cry out to Him when life situations may not be good. Therefore, keep your hope and faith in God alone. He alone is able to help and deliver us. God is the Rock that gives eternal protection to everyone who takes refuge in Him.
