If in the previous devotional we saw God as the Architect of the Universe, then this time we recognize Him as the Sustainer of Life. Like an architect who doesn't just design a building and leave, God remains present, making sure every part of creation works as it should.
The Psalmist describes so poetically how God provides a source of water for all creatures, "You make springs boast in the valleys, streams flow among the mountains" (Psalm 104:10). The water gives drink to the animals, refreshes the trees, and makes the earth fertile. From verse to verse, we see the ever-moving flow of life. It does not stop in one place, but benefits many creatures. Nature was not created for one, but for the entire interdependent creation.
This psalm seems to invite us to pause and notice the simple things that we often miss: the birds that chirp from among the leaves, the grass that grows for the animals, even all the animals of the forest roaming at night. All are in one ecosystem that is taken care of by God's own hand. Nothing is left out of His care.
Friends of the Bible, in an increasingly busy world, we often feel that life is dependent on hard work, systems, or technology. But this Psalm affirms one fundamental thing, that life goes on because God sustains it. He is the source of water that never runs dry, the breath that keeps on giving life. Seeing the world in this way should make us both grateful and responsible. Gratitude, because we are made aware that every day is a gift that is constantly renewed. Responsibility, because we are invited to take care of the life that God has entrusted to us. Not to destroy, but to help keep His creation balanced and sustainable.
