In the history of human civilization various works of art have been produced as civilization grows and develops. Many of these works are about the beauty and awe of the universe that surrounds them. On the one hand, we feel so small in front of the vast universe, while on the other hand, our consciousness is focused on something bigger than us. That is the nuance that we also find in our reading this time.
Psalm 104 is a poem of praise to God. It is based on the greatness of God reflected through the beauty and order of the universe. It invites the faithful to proclaim God's majesty and live life in the full realization that He is in charge of the world and its contents. What is written in this chapter at first glance reminds us of the hymn of the creation of the world in the book of Genesis. In another perspective, the psalmist also brings us to harmony as well as responsibility towards our fellow creatures.
An equally important thing that we can reflect on is the fact that the entire creation is completely dependent on God to "live and breathe".
The psalmist emphatically says that everything is waiting for God who provides food or in other words, organizes life. So the psalmist invites all people to live in praise of God.
Friends of the Bible, God's word today reminds us that ultimately life is a gift that depends on His mercy at all times. We are often trapped in the illusion that a human being is an independent entity and does not need anyone to determine the direction of his life. The psalmist reminds us that such independence is an illusion, for even the air we breathe, the heart that beats, and the energy we have all come from the life-giving Spirit of God.
