From the beginning, we have been taught to always praise God. Praise to Him is a sincere form of relationship based on His great being and His marvelous deeds upon the universe. Unfortunately, our praise to God often depends on God's actions, which we interpret as His blessings and answers to our prayers. Meanwhile, when something happens outside of our expectations, the praise is no longer offered. Therefore, today we are reminded of the true meaning of praise to God according to the testimony of the Psalmist.
The Psalmist begins our reading this time with an invitation to praise God and thank Him with all our hearts. The outpouring of gratitude does not only speak of personal gratitude, but liturgically in the congregation or fellowship of the righteous. The praise is based on a great desire to recognize/examine His deeds. The psalmist invites the people to reflect on all of God's love and goodness. From the details of God's goodness and works described in the passage, we can see God's mighty deeds. It is only fitting that we give thanks and meditate on God's deeds day and night.
In verses 6-9 we are reminded of the deliverance of the Israelites from the land of Egypt. The story became a narrative that the Israelites lived for generations. Thus, a little memory of the liberation event brings awe of God's work and help that encourages us to be grateful. In that gratitude there is obedience and submission to His word. He is the only One who is present and manifests His work in people's lives.
Isn't God also working similar deliverance in the history of each of our lives. Every day we never escape His love and help, so let us always give thanks to God. The Lord and His power are the only reasons for us to be thankful because He has done the best part for our lives. Even when sorrow or challenges come our way, let's still give thanks to Him because He never leaves us.
