Everyone wants the faith that he has and lives, to be lived well and vigorously by his offspring and future generations. Isn't that the prayer of every Christian parent? We hope that the children that God has given us will have a good future. This is not only a matter of material security, but also the godliness of the life they maintain in the Lord. Of course, our role as parents plays a big part in this process.
This is also what the psalmist is trying to say in our passage. He praises God for those who fear the LORD and love His commandments. The righteous have a good quality of life. They are loving, merciful and just. Such justice colors his life in such a way that it appears in his treatment of others in need. In all the struggles and challenges of life, his heart is steadfast to the words and commands of God. That is where the virtue of the righteous comes from. Even the wicked are envious of the virtue and righteousness of those who fear God.
The interesting thing about this passage is that the quality of life of these God-fearing people affects their children and grandchildren. The welfare of children and descendants was a subject of blessing and prayer in Israelite tradition. It was not only about the inheritance of material things, but especially faith in God. Therefore, verses 2-3 juxtapose possessions or wealth with virtue. Both are equally God's blessings that grow in obedience to God.
Let us grow into people who fear Him and obey all His commands. Today the world is suffering from a crisis of example. When those who have the authority to model the truth to the next generation do the opposite, this includes parents. It is time for Christian parents to set an example of living a life of faith to their offspring by teaching them to live a life of obedience and example derived from His word. Those who fear the Lord will live out His word at all times and bring forth families and future generations who also fear the Lord.
