We often admire the splendour of what we see before our eyes: tall buildings, branded clothes, or impressive financial success. They seem to symbolise success and blessings. However, we often forget to ask: what story is hidden behind the splendour? There are labourers who work without a living wage, there are workers who are treated unfairly, there are those whose voices are never heard. This reality reminds us that not all success is built on justice. This is where wisdom invites us to look deeper, beyond what appears on the surface.
Proverbs 14:31 states, "He who oppresses the weak despises his Maker, but he who has compassion on the poor honours him." This teaching is powerful, as it directly connects our actions towards others with our attitude towards God. It is based on the belief that every human being is created by God. Therefore, when someone is oppressed, whether personally or through an unjust system, it is not only the human being who is being humiliated, but also the Creator. Mercy, on the other hand, is not just a moral act, but an act of faith. This principle also aligns with the teachings in Deuteronomy 15:1-11, which emphasises the responsibility of God's people to open their hands to those in need.
We realise that one can be apathetic about injustice when one does not see its impact first-hand. However, empathy restores our sensitivity. When we choose to care, help, and treat others with respect, we are restoring the humanity that God instilled in us. Compassion is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of maturity of faith.
Friends of the Bible, today's Proverbs invites us to examine our hearts and lives. Are we truly glorifying God in the way we treat others? Faith is not only expressed through prayer and worship, but also through justice, honesty, and compassion. Every time we choose to honour, protect and help the weak, we are glorifying God. For often, the face of God is present not in eye-popping splendour, but in others who need our love.
