Recently, we have heard news about the significant rise in gold prices. Many people are rushing to buy gold to protect the value of their wealth from inflation. This is a wise move, as gold is known to be a relatively stable asset when the value of currencies weakens. In the midst of economic uncertainty, gold becomes a symbol of security, something that is believed to safeguard the future. However, God's word today invites us to look further: there is another type of inflation that often goes unnoticed, namely the inflation of character and meaning in life. The value of integrity, wisdom, and direction in life can be eroded not by the market, but by our own choices and ways of living. To deal with such inflation, gold is not enough.
Proverbs 16:16 asserts, "Acquiring wisdom is better than gold, and gaining understanding is more valuable than silver." In this context, acquiring wisdom is described as a merchant deliberately seeking and "buying" something valuable. Wisdom is not something that comes instantly, but is acquired through a process of study, contemplation, and obedience to God. In the days of the writer of Proverbs, gold and silver had a very high value and were used in various aspects of life. However, the teacher of wisdom emphasised that the value of wisdom far surpassed them. Gold can protect physical needs, but wisdom guides the entire course of man's life. It helps people make the right decisions, maintain relationships, and walk in righteousness.
Man needs more than material security. Without wisdom, even wealth cannot provide inner peace. On the contrary, a person who has wisdom has inner stability, because his life is in harmony between thoughts, words, and deeds. Wisdom becomes an internal wealth that cannot be stolen, cannot be lost, and cannot be eroded by time. Even in difficult times, wisdom provides peace and the ability to keep moving in the right direction.
Friends of the Bible, today's Proverbs invites us to re-evaluate what we have been considering as our primary investment in life. We can be wise in managing our material blessings, but we should not neglect the far more important investment of building wisdom and understanding. Wisdom grows when we faithfully learn from God's word, humbly accept His discipline, and are willing to live according to His ways. This is an investment whose value never diminishes. When everything in the world changes, God's wisdom remains a solid foundation, keeping our lives meaningful, purposeful, and peaceful.
