Time is the most honest tester. It cannot be sped up, it cannot be bribed, and it cannot be manipulated. As each day passes, time reveals who we really are. Do we grow in maturity or do we stay stuck in the same mould. In a culture that glorifies speed and instant achievement, God's word invites us to see a different measure. True honour is not born from momentary success, but from character that is tested by time and shaped by wisdom.
Proverbs 16:31 states, "White hair is a beautiful crown, obtained in the way of righteousness." In Israel's wisdom tradition, white hair symbolised dignity and honour. But this verse asserts that grey hair becomes a "crown" only when it is obtained through the path of righteousness. Longevity is not just a boast of quantity, but a testimony of the quality of life. A person is honoured not because of how long he lives, but because of how he lives: whether he walks in integrity, speaks wisely, and acts with righteousness.
The book of Proverbs repeatedly emphasises that longevity is associated with a life of wisdom and virtue. In contrast, the path of wickedness often leads to destruction. Therefore, aging in the light of God's word is not a setback, but a process of maturation. Time becomes the field where wisdom grows, and integrity becomes the fruit that crowns life. Those who look back and see their lives filled with meaning, honesty, and virtue will feel peace. That is the "crown" inwardly. Conversely, a life filled with regret will give birth to bitterness. Proverbs 16:31 seems to affirm that the glory of age is not in the colour of its hair, but in the integrity that accompanies it. But the passage does not stop at age. Proverbs 16:32 states that a patient man is better than a warrior, and a man of self-control than one who takes a city. This is a different measure of glory than the world. The world praises those who rule over others; God's word glorifies those who are able to rule over themselves. Even verse 33 reminds us that despite all human planning, it is God who has the final say. A wise life is one that rests in His sovereignty.
Friends of the Bible, every day we are being tested by time. The small choices we make today are shaping the crown of our future lives. May we not just grow older, but increase in wisdom. For when time tests, only wisdom glorifies: bringing us to maturity, peace, and honour before God.
