Do you remember the times in the past when you were taught by others? Whether it was from your mum or dad, your grandparents, or even your teachers at school. Receiving discipline from authoritative figures in our lives is often uncomfortable. It feels like our egos and desires want to rebel and defend themselves as soon as possible. Growing up, criticism and reprimands from others seem to be personal attacks that destroy us. Yet often in these educations or even reprimands, there is a useful truth that will make us a better person.
In our reading, wisdom positions herself as a source of instruction in the life of a human being. He reminds man to be careful in what he says, acts, and thinks. The LORD sees and knows every move of His people (v. 3). Therefore, walk in His instruction. Wisdom can also come through the upbringing of those around us. Especially those who love us. That is why it says in our reading today that those who are foolish are those who reject their father's instruction. While those who heed rebuke are wise.
Today chastening and rebuke are often seen as something bad and damaging to personal credibility. Yet the wisdom advice we receive today identifies chastening and even rebuke as the way to wisdom. It even says in verse 10 that severe chastening is a necessity for those who forsake the way of the Lord. When chastisement is delivered, its purpose is to educate, to transform people into knowing what is right and wrong. Sometimes chastisement is harsh, but other times it is gentle.
Friends of the Bible, let's listen to God's discipline that is often delivered by people around us. It is life-changing, but those who are hard-hearted will ignore it. May His wisdom guide us to listen wholeheartedly and be changed by His power.
