Conceit is one of the characteristics of human weakness that we should be aware of. In the wrapping of pride, even good actions towards others become worthless. Even our words can be used as a stage for pride. Being aware of the signs of pride is one of the qualities of a believer's life. This is the wisdom that we want to explore through this reading.
In Proverbs 18:12 an interesting piece of advice is expressed, "Highness of heart precedes destruction, but humility precedes honour."
Highness of heart refers to being arrogant, self-righteous, and unwilling to be rebuked. In Israel's wisdom tradition, pride is not just a character or moral issue, but something that has consequences for the spiritual life. Those who are proud also close themselves off to God's rebuke and instructions.
One of the markers of pride lies in one's response to what is put before them. Proverbs 18 shows several clues, one of which is that reactive speech is much faster than one's logical processing. Verse 13 tells us, "If a man answers before he hears, that is his folly and his reproach." People want to appear so agile and dexterous when what they say is not necessarily true (v. 17). Speaking quickly without thinking is a sign of foolishness and arrogance, while those who are wise and humble will make room to know and listen carefully.
Bible friends, being a humble person is not easy. There are so many temptations and traps to be humble. In everyday wisdom, it is even said that there is no humble person who says they are humble. But in our submission to God's wisdom, humility should be a necessity that comes out of our hearts. So let us strive to be vigilant in our words and behaviour, submitting ourselves to His commands, so that we may become humble people.
