Maybe we are familiar with the proverb that says, "an empty barrel makes a loud noise". This expression reminds us that empty things often sound the loudest, while full things don't make much noise. In our daily lives, we can see this picture play out. There are people who try to show strength through stiff demeanour, sharp words, or even by putting others down. Quite often, their lives seem to be successful, so there is a temptation in our hearts to feel envious or question the value of the life we are living. However, today's Proverbs reminds us that the true measure of strength lies not in what appears on the surface, but in the depth of wisdom that shapes one's life.
The author of Proverbs exhorts, "Do not envy the wicked" (v. 1), for beneath the apparent success, their hearts are filled with destructive plans. In contrast, a life built with wisdom is described as a house that is built, established, and filled with valuable and attractive possessions (vv. 3-4). The word "filled" here indicates abundance, not just material abundance, but also an abundance of faith values such as peace, integrity, and steadfastness. A life filled with wisdom is not dependent on human recognition, because it is rooted in a solid foundation.
In addition, we are again reminded that wisdom gives true strength (vv. 5-6). This strength is not just outward strength, but inner strength that gives the ability to endure and make the right decisions. Even in times of distress, the quality of one's life is tested. It is at such times that it is seen whether our lives are truly built on wisdom, or merely stand on a fragile foundation.
Friends of the Bible, wisdom may not always attract attention, but it provides a hopeful future. God's word invites us not to pursue superficial confessions, but to build a life filled with wisdom. May we learn to pay more attention to the inside than the outside. For a life filled with wisdom will radiate a calm and steady strength, and lead us to the future that God provides.
