Fall Down But Rise Again

Often we witness how a person's downfall turns into a spectacle. Mistakes made are quickly spread, discussed here and there, sometimes even accompanied by a cynical or mocking tone. In this kind of atmosphere, failure is not only painful for the person experiencing it, but also easily turns into a joke for others. But the Proverbs of wisdom teach a different attitude.

In Proverbs 24:15-17, the wicked is described as someone who stalks the dwelling of the righteous, waiting for the moment he falls. This image suggests a mentality that looks forward to seeing others fail. But Proverbs gives a strong message, "For though the righteous man falls seven times, he gets up again." This means that even the righteous is not immune to failure. He can fall, even repeatedly. What distinguishes the righteous is not that he never falls, but rather that he does not dwell in the fall. He gets back up again. There is an inner perseverance that keeps him from giving in to his own failures. He learns from his mistakes, mends his ways, and moves on. Interestingly, Proverbs also reminds us how a righteous man should behave when he sees others fall, namely by not rejoicing when his enemy falls. The righteous man does not make the failure of others a source of satisfaction. He realises that human life is fragile. This realisation breeds humility and compassion, not ridicule or cheers.

Friends of the Bible, today's Proverbs reminds us that "a fall" is not the end of the journey. Everyone can stumble, but there is always a chance to get back up and move on with renewed hope. At the same time, we are invited to guard our hearts and empathise when we see others falling. Because in the end, the maturity of faith is not measured by a life free from failure, but by the perseverance to get up every time we fall and the greatness of heart to remain compassionate to others who are struggling to stand up again.
