A moment's emotion, a reputation gone

Many of life's big problems are not born out of malicious intent, but rather out of reacting too quickly. When emotions run high (anger, offence, or feeling unfairly treated), the urge to respond immediately is often strong. Words are spoken before they have time to be weighed, and decisions are made before they have time to be thought through clearly. Yet what is said or published in an instant can leave a trail that is much longer than the emotions that gave birth to it.

The wisdom in today's Proverbs reminds one not to be hasty in bringing matters before the public. Even when one feels he has seen wrongdoing, he may have only seen a small part of the whole event. Without a full understanding, accusations made in haste can turn out to be a source of embarrassment when the truth is revealed. Proverbs therefore advises that problems with others should be resolved wisely and not by exposing them to the public. Once a secret is out, it is not easily retracted. A tarnished good name is not easily restored. In our lives today, this warning feels even more real. What has been spread in the public space, especially in the digital space, often leaves lasting traces. Trust lost is not easily restored.

The passage closes with a powerful message, "As a city whose walls are broken down, so is a man who has no self-control" (Proverbs 25:28). In the ancient world, city walls were the ultimate protection from enemy attacks. Without walls, the city would be exposed and easily attacked. The same is true for a person who lacks self-control. Without an inner boundary guarding him, he becomes easily dragged down by provocation, pressure, or destructive emotional impulses.

Friends of the Bible, today's Proverbs reminds us of the importance of self-control. When we are able to restrain our emotional reactions, we make room for reason and wisdom to work. For wisdom is not born from quick reactions, but from a calm heart that is able to weigh things clearly. In the end, integrity is not determined by how loud we speak, but by the ability to keep our hearts and respond with a cool head. Because often, it is not external attacks that undermine one's reputation, but uncontrollable emotions from within.
