If we could look back for a moment at the path of life we have traveled, what would be our response? Perhaps one of them is awe and gratitude for the various life events that occur without ever escaping the embrace of His love. These flashbacks give birth to the strength needed in living our daily lives. Not because of our own strength, but because of God's love and provision.

In this passage, the psalmist invites the people of that time to take a look at the history of their nation. One of the important milestones for the people of Israel was the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in the land of Egypt. In a unique literary style, the psalmist recounts how the Israelites came out of Egypt. Think of him as a poet describing beautiful events in slightly hyperbolic, but warm and evocative diction. The psalmist describes the great deliverance as a revelation of God's power that shook the order of the universe. God parted the Rift Sea and stopped the flow of the Jordan River. Nearly every mountain pass holds miraculous memories, especially when a hard rock mountain yields water to drink.

The psalmist seems to be dialoguing with nature to display the wonders of God. The natural objects that had previously been silent witnesses to everything, now spoke and exalted God's work upon Israel. It is the Lord of Hosts who moves them. This personification is to bring a close memory to the people of Israel so that they will always remember God's work of deliverance.

Doesn't God also never stop doing His work in our lives. He even uses the universe to bring goodness into our lives. Therefore, when life is not okay, look back briefly at the past and feel His loving embrace. From there comes the hope that never ends in our lives.
