The modern world is known for its rapid progress and development process. Everything can happen instantly. But in that instant process, meaning is often eroded and humans do not get the space to reflect on the meaning of their lives. As a result, life just flows without having time to contemplate what decisions have been taken and passed. Although sometimes the results of contemplation are far from what is ideal, but we are invited to keep looking for and living the meaning of life that we really hold.
In this reading, Ecclesiastes describes himself as the king of Israel who lives a life devoted to seeking wisdom and investigating everything that happens under heaven. His conclusion is that life is mysterious. The search for meaning itself is exhausting because as far as the eye can see there is only futility. An attempt to catch the wind, to catch something that cannot be grasped. The preacher's conclusion is a form of humility that modern civilisation really needs. We think we can change and control everything, but imperfections will always be there. Unexpected things come and go. So much more is beyond human control.
The preacher's reflection seems to invite us to take an honest look. Life is tiring. Waking up early in the morning, rushing to school or work, labouring all day, getting stuck in unreasonable traffic, then returning home to sleep in exhaustion. All this becomes an endless routine. Then wouldn't it be better to be an ignorant person, living life as it is without bothering to contemplate meaning and wisdom? It could be like that, but isn't God with those who live in His wisdom and teachings. We grow in the struggle to find meaning, even those that seem absurd. In addition, through wisdom, everyone is challenged to dialogue the meaning of life with the Divine Providence that continues to be woven into the world. So that the believer does not succumb to the banality of life, but seeks to see the beauty in the belief in God who is sufficient and takes care of everything.
