A wise man once said that the only certainty in human life is uncertainty itself. Although humans are born with the intellect to make anticipations for the future, we are still limited beings who can predict with certainty what will happen in the future. Good or bad, pleasant or sad, healthy or sick, all have the same chance of happening. So the right question to reflect on is not about how we can predict the future, but how to deal with the uncertainty of life.
Today we will look at the preacher's discourse on the proper attitude in the uncertainty of life. Broadly speaking, he sees that the uncertainties of life are risky, but at the same time they create opportunities to realise a more meaningful life. Through verse 1, he wants to emphasise that life should ultimately be seen as an opportunity that must be utilised well and wisely. The uncertainties of life should not be responded to in a foolish way, i.e. just waiting and doing nothing, or in more popular terms "resigning to fate." Ecclesiastes recommends responding to the uncertainties by fuelling the spirit and trust to face the uncertainties with faith in God.
Wisdom of life can be achieved if one has managed to get out of the fear of life's uncertainties. Whereas in the clarity of our hearts we will be able to see that there are things that we cannot control, but there are certain things that we can control. This is where we struggle, which is to prepare as well as possible what we can control and control. Those who are too afraid to take a step and only wait for ideal conditions, will never act and move on. After that the preacher concluded his exhortation for everyone to boldly celebrate this life full of mystery. So that instead of speculating about the future and always expecting certainty, we are guided to be present in the present and do what we can do. Enjoy the life that God has given us, it is all possible when we are truly present in the present.
It seems that the preacher's exhortation at this time really touches the hearts of those of us who are dwelling in a world that is plagued with various challenges and struggles. There are always certain things happening in the world that can bring anxiety and fear into our lives. Starting from the global situation, the fate of our country, to threats to our own personal lives. The rising prices of basic commodities, the uncertainty of the investment climate, and the fate of our respective workplaces are some of the very real examples we face. God reminds us to keep going and celebrate life that is indeed full of mystery and uncertainty. He invites us to be truly present in the present and see His goodness happening right now. The world may be turbulent, but isn't the gentle wind always blowing to wipe the sweat from our foreheads and soothe our weary souls. In that gentle wind, God's greetings and providence are evident. So there are two things that are certain in this world, namely the uncertainty of life and God's love and inclusion.
