Everyone needs a handle or a foothold in life. Some find it in power and possessions, or relationships with powerful people. But true believers are taught to place their hopes and build their grip on God alone. This conviction of faith is easy to say but often difficult to put into practice.
This is what Judah struggled with. In those days Ethiopia was known as a resilient and powerful nation, which could even control Egypt. Meanwhile in the area, the Assyrian Empire was also growing as a powerful empire. At one point, Ethiopia and Egypt invited the kingdom of Judah to ally against Assyria. If Judah only relied on his mind and logic, then the offer was actually very attractive. God intervened and re-established His power. Asserting that He is the only one who works and has power. In verse 3, God calls the whole world to Himself. The Lord alone will destroy the enemy and in the process He will include the Gentiles and bring deliverance to Judah. Therefore, do not seek your own way and rely on God.
Isaiah 18:4-6 goes on to describe God as a King sitting on His throne watching all the tumult on earth in silence and calm. Even so, God is present everywhere and His throne covers the entire face of the earth. Those who resist God will soon come to an end like grape branches that are pruned or fields that end up being eaten by birds of prey.
Friends of the Bible, if you find yourself in a difficult and struggling situation today, stand firm in your faith in the God of life. The world may provide a seemingly solid grip, but it is only in God that we find lasting love and protection. Therefore, believers throughout the ages have not been swayed by changing times but have stood firm in the Lord.
