Life Support

Recently, we have seen how insecurity has become a part of many people's daily lives. In many places, news about the increase in crime, including begging in several places, street violence, and various events that are recorded and spread quickly on social media, make people more vigilant in carrying out their daily activities. In the midst of a situation like this, it is only natural that people begin to realise the importance of tightening security, relying on networks of relationships, avoiding risks, and several efforts are made for security. In times like these, people tend to look for something to fall back on, something that seems stable in an ever-changing world.

Isaiah 17 speaks in this landscape. The text emerges in the midst of the Syro-Ephraimite Crisis in the 8th century BC, when Damascus (Aram) and Northern Israel (Ephraim) formed a political alliance to face the threat of the Assyrian Empire. The alliance was born not of peace, but of fear. Judah itself was pressurised to join, but refused. In Isaiah's eyes, what was happening was not just geopolitical manoeuvring, but a crisis of confidence: nations were beginning to rely on their own strategies and strengths for salvation.

Socially, Northern Israel also began to adopt foreign lifestyles and religiosities that promised quick results and instant stability. The image of the “beautiful garden” became a symbol of a life that was pragmatically pursued, but slowly lost its spiritual and ethical roots. What appears to be an attempt at survival becomes a sign of a shift in the direction of the heart. It is at this point that Isaiah emphasises the core of his message: "You have forgotten the God who saved you, and have not remembered the rock of your strength" (v. 10). This is not just a rebuke, but Isaiah's attempt to dismantle their illusion of security. What is considered strong is not always able to sustain life when shocks come. Not everything that seems stable is truly reliable, many of life's pillars look strong until they are tested by time and crisis.

Friends of the Bible, Isaiah 17 invites us to ask an honest question: when the uncertainties of life come our way, where will our hearts lean? There may be many options that seem convincing and reasonable according to human calculations, and all of them seem to be able to provide a temporary sense of security. But in the end, every reliance other than God has its limits. Therefore, faith is called to return to the Rock, the only one that does not falter with the changing times, and does not collapse with any crisis that comes its way.
