Prayer in the Midst of a Crisis

Often, prayer arises not from a place of tranquillity, but from a weary heart and circumstances that feel too heavy to bear alone. Prayer becomes a space where people bring all their helplessness and acknowledge that there are things that can only be entrusted to God.

It is precisely this kind of experience that is seen in Isaiah 37. After receiving a threat from Assyria, Hezekiah did not seek a way out by relying on his own strength. He went to the house of the Lord. Even when he received a threatening letter via the messengers, Hezekiah took the letter and spread it out before the Lord. He did not hide the reality he was facing. He did not pretend to be strong. He brought the threat to God just as it was, as if to say, “Lord, look at what we are facing.”

Interestingly, Hezekiah’s prayer was not merely a plea for help. He began by acknowledging who God is: the Lord of all the earth, the God who reigns over every kingdom on earth, the Creator of heaven and earth. Amidst a threat that sought to demonstrate that human strength is the ultimate determining factor, Hezekiah reminded himself and his people that there is an authority greater than any earthly power. Even when asking for deliverance, the focus of Hezekiah’s prayer was not merely that Judah might be spared suffering, but that the nations might recognise that the Lord alone is the living God. For him, the crisis was not merely about survival, but about realising once more who holds the reins of history.

Dear Bible Friends, we often think that we must come to the Lord when we are strong and at peace. Yet, many prayers actually spring from a weary heart and circumstances that feel too heavy to bear alone. There are times when we come bearing only the ‘letters’ of our lives: fears, struggles, failures, and things we cannot bear on our own.

Hezekiah laid the threatening letter before the Lord, not because the Lord was unaware of it, but because he believed that only the Lord was able to see the matter from a broader perspective. The same applies to us. Do not let fear or feelings of unworthiness drive us away from God. Bring everything to Him. For in prayer, we not only entrust our problems to Him, but also remember that our lives are in God’s hands.
