Hope That Finds a Way

In the Ancient Near East, the arrival of a king was no ordinary event. Before the king arrived, envoys would first be sent to prepare for the journey. Roads were repaired, obstacles removed, and difficult terrain levelled so that the ruler might arrive safely and with honour. The greater a king’s power, the more extensive the preparations made to welcome his arrival. It is this image that emerges in Isaiah 40 when the call is heard: “Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness.”

To modern readers, this expression may sound like a call to prepare one’s heart. However, for the listeners of the Book of Isaiah at that time, these words evoked a very concrete image: that of a King who was to come. Surprisingly, this King was not a ruler of Assyria or Babylon, but the LORD Himself.

This message was addressed to a people living in the shadow of exile and loss. Their future seemed bleak, whilst their identity as God’s people felt shaken. Therefore, this chapter opens with the call, “Comfort, comfort my people.” The comfort referred to is not merely soothing words, but the news that God’s work is not yet finished. He Himself is coming to His people and paving the way for restoration.

This hope is further emphasised through the contrasts presented in the text. All human glory is described as withering grass and fading flowers, but the word of God endures for ever. Amidst a constantly changing world and shifting powers, God’s promise remains steadfast. Therefore, the Lord is present not only as a mighty King, but also as a Shepherd who carries His lambs in His arms and gently guides them. He is strong enough to save and close enough to care for us.

Dear Friends of the Bible, there are times when we feel that life has reached a dead end. The hope that once seemed clear now feels distant, whilst the future is filled with uncertainty. At such times, Isaiah 40 reminds us that hope does not always begin when we manage to find a way out. Often, hope is born when we realise that God is opening a path that we cannot yet see. He is the King who comes to meet His people, and at the same time the Shepherd who walks alongside them. Therefore, when the path ahead seems unclear, keep the faith. For the Lord, who holds our future in His hands, never loses His way in finding and guiding His people.
