For those of us who have experienced parenthood, it’s incredibly frustrating to find that our children are difficult to discipline and tend to repeat the same mistakes. Usually, parents choose not to give up in the face of such situations. They are always looking for other ways to discipline their children, even though anger sometimes flares up and they are forced to take a deep breath. This is exactly what God does for His people. He truly loves us, but within that love there is discipline—even harsh discipline—with the goal of turning us away from our mistakes and making us righteous people.

This is also what happened in the dynamic of the relationship between God and the people of Israel. In the first half of this book, God reveals a deeply heartbreaking reality. They took pride in their status and religious identity as the people of Israel. However, the people of Judah did not truly do what God desired. They turned away from the truth, justice, and integrity that God desired. Yet that is where true faith lies.

So God did not stand idly by as He watched the Israelites rebel. He had planned His discipline, which He had even foretold long ago. God knew that this nation was so stubborn and difficult to discipline. His early warning served to emphasize that everything that happened was done by God to purify Israel. He used suffering to discipline Israel, just as precious metal is purified in a furnace.

Dear Friends in the Bible, right now we may be going through some very difficult and unpleasant circumstances in our lives. Be assured that God is still in control and will bring about the best outcome. Open your hearts to the possibility that what is happening is God’s way of teaching and maturing us. May God guide us in His wisdom so that we may understand everything according to His ways and His will.
