In such heavy and heart-wrenching struggles, we usually feel so alone. There are no friends or family present to walk alongside us through these trials. Indeed, we often feel as though God is silent amidst these struggles. Is that really the case? 

Our passage today may help us to reflect a little on that question. Isaiah 48:12–22 affirms His sovereignty over history in verses 12–16. The way He asserts His sovereignty is contrasted with the gods of Babylon, who usually have ‘territorial domains’. As such, they are no different from lifeless, powerless objects. Not only that, but God also reigns over time and history. He inscribes His work in various events—whether past, present or future. This includes the deliverance of Judah from Babylon. 

Amidst God’s almighty power and incomparable generosity, it seems that Israel still turned away from Him. This has happened throughout history. Nevertheless, God remains willing to be Israel’s Redeemer. He reminds His people to always heed His commandments. Now God is calling Israel out of exile. The narrative conveyed by God reminds His people of the exodus of Israel’s forefathers from the land of Egypt. If, at a certain point in history, Israel was redeemed by Him, then now God will do the same—and even more powerfully. A sign of His never-ending work. 

Even today, God continues to work in world history. He inscribes His work in various events, including everything that happens in our lives. When we are tempted to feel alone and lonely as life’s struggles and challenges come our way, remember that even at that moment God is unfolding His work of salvation to the world. This includes being present to walk alongside us through the various struggles we are currently facing.
