Listen to His Voice

Imagine a house or a building that looks splendid from the outside. It soars high towards the sky, adorned with all manner of eye-catching ornamentation. Yet inside, the building is actually fragile. The materials used to construct it are not of the highest quality and are not the correct size. The foundations were hastily laid, and there are many other issues besides. It is just like us: from the outside we appear to be fine, beautiful and strong, but we have fragile hearts and are far from Him.

The nation of Judah once appeared to be doing well and managed to survive even after its ‘sister’, the Kingdom of Israel, had been destroyed. However, it appears that the situation within the kingdom itself was, in fact, far from well. Our passage today begins with an expression of God’s wrath, which had reached its peak; indeed, He forbade Jeremiah from interceding on the nation’s behalf. Judah had committed abominations in God’s sight. They worshipped other gods, and this form of worship had permeated the culture of every household. God no longer accepted the nation’s sacrificial rituals, for what they did was not rooted in deep spirituality but was merely a hollow display. In truth, what God desires is humanity’s obedience to His commands. Just as He once delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt and commanded them to heed His voice (vv. 21–28).

Thus, God now reminds us of the spiritual and religious journey we have been undertaking. Perhaps we have become trapped in religious formalities that manifest in all manner of ritualistic practices, yet lack deep meaning and tangible impact on our daily lives. From Monday to Saturday we live according to the ways of the world, whilst on Sundays, through our worship, we appear to return to Him. God desires a life centred on His voice (v. 23). This means a unity of understanding and way of life grounded solely in His word.
