There is a difference between being close and being attached. We may be close to the church, to spiritual activities, or even to knowledge of God’s Word, but that does not necessarily mean that we are truly attached to Him.

Jeremiah 13:1–11 conveys this message through a symbolic act. The Lord instructed Jeremiah to wear a linen belt, then to hide it in a crevice in the rock. When retrieved, the belt had rotted and was useless. Why a belt? In verse 11, God explains, “Just as a belt is fastened round a man’s waist, so I had fastened the whole house of Israel and the house of Judah to Me.”” This image illustrates God’s profound will: the people are called not merely to know Him, but to live in a close relationship with Him.

However, that relationship has been broken. Verse 9 mentions “the arrogance of Judah and the haughtiness of Jerusalem” as things that will be worn away. Judah was not a nation that did not know God. They had a history as the chosen people, of the covenant, of the Temple, and of the traditions of faith. But that identity could become a source of false security: because they felt they were God’s people, they assumed God would certainly be on their side. This is where Jeremiah’s criticism becomes sharp. An identity that ought to be a calling has turned into a privilege. Their relationship with God has turned into pride in their status as God’s people. They feel close to God without truly living in union with Him.

Dear Friends of the Bible, might something similar happen to us? We may know many verses by heart, be active in ministry, worship diligently, and take pride in our religious identity, yet gradually lose our humility, our sensitivity to the Word, and our dependence on God. Outwardly, we may appear to be fine, but little by little the flame of our faith can dim; therefore, let us re-examine our relationship with Him: are we truly united with God, or do we merely feel close to Him?
