There are times when the calling we once embraced with joy feels so burdensome to fulfil. We continue to believe, to serve, and to strive to remain faithful, yet deep within our hearts there is a weariness that is not easily expressed. We may ask, “How long must I endure all this?”
Jeremiah knew that feeling. He was called to proclaim the word of the Lord, but that calling made him a laughingstock and led to his rejection. He even said, “I will not remember Him, nor will I speak in His name any more.” Yet, the word felt like a fire burning within his bones. He wanted to stop, but could not simply abandon his calling. Jeremiah did not hide his struggle. He dared to complain to God, even saying, “Cursed be the day I was born!” To some believers, such an expression might sound too harsh. Shouldn’t believers always be grateful and strong?
However, perhaps it is precisely here that we learn that faith does not always mean denying what we are feeling. There are times when we are weary, times when we are disappointed, and times when we do not understand God’s ways. Acknowledging all of this honestly does not mean we lack faith. On the contrary, honesty can be a form of courage that enables us to bring our whole selves before God.
Dear Friends of the Bible, there are times when we try to hide our wounds behind the words, “I’m fine.” Yet, something that is denied does not necessarily disappear. It may linger, slowly settling within us. Therefore, perhaps one of the arts of living by faith is learning to speak honestly to God about what is truly happening within us. So, if today your calling, responsibilities, or life’s journey feel too heavy, do not deny it. Come to God with honesty. Tell Him when we are weary, disappointed, afraid, or even when we want to give up. For within His calling, there is His presence.
