We often assume that our identity stems from our work, family, status or achievements. In fact, our identity is also shaped by the values we continually live by. The problem is that today we live amidst so many things that influence the way we view life. Social media presents trends, lifestyles, standards of success, and even images of happiness. Without realising it, what we constantly see, hear and follow can shape the way we view life and what we consider important.
Jeremiah 35:1–19 introduces us to the Rechabites, a group with a distinctive way of life passed down by Jonadab son of Rechab, their forefather. They did not drink wine, did not build houses, did not own vineyards or fields, and lived as sojourners. When Jeremiah invited them to drink wine, they refused because they remained faithful to Jonadab’s command; even whilst they were in Jerusalem due to the threat from Babylon, they did not abandon the way of life that had become part of their identity.
Interestingly, the Lord subsequently used the faithfulness of the Rechabites as a rebuke to Judah. The Rechabites faithfully carried out their ancestor’s command, whilst the people were unfaithful to His word. The issue is not merely about whether or not to drink wine, but about the relationship between what one believes and how one lives one’s life. The Rechabites demonstrate that values consistently lived out can become part of one’s identity.
Dear Bible Friends, every day we are confronted with so many things that capture our attention and offer certain ways of living our lives. Little by little, what we continually see and follow can make us less critical in determining what is important for our lives. However, not everything that is currently popular or widely favoured needs to be something we pursue. Amidst so many voices influencing us, we can still choose the values we wish to uphold and live by. For what we do repeatedly ultimately becomes not only a habit, but also helps to shape who we are.
