Being righteous before Him should be our only desire. Righteousness is not only about a well-established spiritual life, but also about realizing a responsible life according to God's will. God delights in the righteous and it is in that righteousness that our relationship with Him is strengthened. It makes us shine in the midst of a world that compromises on unrighteousness.
The psalmist's theme in chapter 26 is like someone who is appealing to a court of law. The difference is that this time he is appealing to God as the supreme Judge. In order to prove the truth, the psalmist points out a series of facts that show the quality of his life. Verses 1-3 are the first defense that asserts that he lives in sincerity according to God's nature and will. He claims to be righteous. Not because he is righteous in himself but because he relies on God's own revelation. That attitude can be tested and probed, tried to see if it stands the test until it is shown to be a heart that directs itself to wisdom.
Then it was only natural that he truly loved and longed for the house of God which symbolized His existence (v. 8). He wanted to show his commitment to live in sincerity and faith without hesitation. This does not mean that the psalmist feels he can do no wrong, but rather he wants to show that he relies on God's forgiveness and work that shapes and guides him.
The psalmist's call in chapter 26 helps us to have clarity of heart in choosing what is right before Him. Isn't it true that in this life we are often on the threshold of choices that can lead us to unrighteousness. The choices are wrapped up so attractively and offer a quick way out to the comfort of the world, but they all lead to destruction. Let us live righteously according to His will. Ask God to examine our hearts so that if there are any inappropriate motivations in our hearts, then He can rebuke us with His word. Let us live out our faith with commitment to righteousness and holiness for the glory of God.
