Knowing what is right does not always make it easy to choose it. We may understand what ought to be done, but at the same time feel afraid of what might happen if we do it. There are choices that require us to let go of something precious, disappoint others, leave behind a sense of security, or face consequences we are not yet ready to bear. Therefore, a decision is never simply about what we believe to be right. Behind it all lie fears, hopes, interests, and various things we are trying to hold on to.
Such a struggle is evident in Zedekiah. Jerusalem was under siege by the Babylonians when the king secretly summoned Jeremiah and asked for an honest answer. Jeremiah did not give him false hope. He said that if Zedekiah surrendered to the Babylonian leaders, he would live and the city would not be burnt. However, faced with that choice, Zedekiah said, “I am afraid of the men of Judah who have defected to the Chaldeans, for I might be handed over into their hands, and they might mistreat me.” As king, he faced not only external threats but also internal pressure. His choice could determine the fate of himself, the city, and the people he led.
Dear Bible Friends, perhaps we too have found ourselves at a crossroads like Zedekiah. Realising that every choice has consequences can make us hesitate to make a decision and keep searching for other possibilities, even when the direction we wish to take is unclear. Procrastination may indeed bring temporary relief. However, avoiding the problem will not make it go away. We can start by recognising what it is we are actually afraid of, seeing what we can still control, and then taking one small step to face it. We may not know the entire path ahead, but we can always choose to take a step and entrust that path to God.
