Natural disasters and wars can transform people’s lives in the blink of an eye. Homes are destroyed, livelihoods are lost, and the sense of security they once enjoyed suddenly crumbles. In the midst of such circumstances, people are confronted with the reality that not everything is within their control. So, how do we understand God’s presence and power in the midst of a crisis?
The people of Judah, exiled to Babylon, experienced similar struggles. Far from their homeland and the Temple, they lost much of what had long sustained their identity and faith. Yet, whilst in exile, Ezekiel received a vision of the glory of the LORD.
In his vision, Ezekiel saw wheels moving alongside living creatures, with circles full of eyes (vv. 15–21). These wheels formed part of the image of a mobile divine throne, implying that God’s presence is not confined to any one place. Above these living creatures stretched something like a firmament, and then a throne appeared with a figure resembling a human, surrounded by a light like fire and a rainbow (vv. 22–28). This throne affirms God’s sovereignty, which transcends human power. Although Babylon dominated the lives of the people of Judah, that power was not the supreme authority. God remains sovereign, even whilst His people are in exile.
For victims of disasters and war, a crisis can escalate into a humanitarian tragedy that shatters their entire lives. The loss of loved ones, homes and livelihoods can lead to psychological trauma, an identity crisis and uncertainty about the future. When protection systems weaken, vulnerable groups—particularly women and children—also face the threat of violence and exploitation. Therefore, believing in God’s power does not mean ignoring suffering. Faith, in fact, calls us to show empathy, offer assistance, and advocate for the protection of those in need.
Dear Friends of the Bible, to varying degrees, we too are not immune to crisis. There are times when life feels as though it is moving aimlessly, whilst we are unable to change the situation or make sense of everything that is happening. Ezekiel’s vision reminds us that human limitations are no barrier to God’s power. We may not always receive answers or see circumstances improve immediately. Yet, amidst uncertainty, we can still place our hope in Him, whilst showing genuine care for our fellow human beings who are struggling.
