Becoming a Christ-Fluencer: A Content Creator Who Brings Blessings

On 20 June, the Indonesian Bible Society (LAI) had the valuable opportunity to collaborate with the Indonesian Christian Church (GKI) Coyudan Solo in organising a Digital Literacy event. Together with a content creator, Atma Simanungkalit, LAI was there to explain how to be a wise follower of Christ whilst engaging in online activities, including the use of social media in today’s digital age. Furthermore, this event aimed to equip participants to become competent content creators, both in terms of substance and technical skills.

At 3.30 pm, several teenagers could already be seen waiting for the event to begin in the church courtyard. The church’s multimedia team were also enthusiastically preparing the various technical requirements to ensure the event ran smoothly. Reggy Leo—a content creator, a youth ministry worker at GKI Coyudan and Digital Ministry, as well as the initiator of this event—was actively giving instructions to both the church’s multimedia team and the team from the Indonesian Bible Society.

At exactly 16.45 WIB, the official event began. A total of 36 participants, comprising secondary school pupils and young people—both from within and outside the GKI Coyudan congregation—listened enthusiastically to the opening address by Reggy Leo. The event then continued with a presentation on digital culture by Mr Laksono from the LAI Digital Department.

As the much-anticipated main session began, Atma Simanungkalit shared his insights and personal experiences regarding content creation on social media. Atma discussed various aspects of creativity and his work as a Christian content creator. From the very beginning of his digital ministry journey to his success in gaining around 60,000 followers, he shared it all with great enthusiasm and was met with keen interest from the participants.

Atma emphasised that there is much in the Bible that can be explored and shared online. His success to date is also due in part to the application of the content creation ‘formula’ he uses, namely:

  • Hook: How to captivate your audience so they’re immediately drawn to your content within the first few seconds.
  • Body: The essence or main message of the content itself.
  • Call to Action (CTA): The way content creators encourage viewers to take action related to the content’s objective, such as putting the video’s message into practice or encouraging them to follow (follow) the social media account.

Following the Atma session, the event continued with a technical discussion and practical workshop on content creation, led by Hizkia Yosurandri from the Content Division of LAI’s Digital Department. During this session, participants were guided through the entire production process, from scriptwriting and equipment preparation to the editing stage, with the aim of producing high-quality content.

The highlight of the event was the hands-on content creation session. The participants were divided into nine groups to put all the material they had learnt into practice. Full of enthusiasm, these young people tried their hand at creating creative content based on Bible stories. To support this process, the LAI team also provided alternative resources relating to the Bible via an AI-based app called ALIN (Interactive Bible).

Finally, at 19.00 WIB, all the content entries had been successfully collected. In just under an hour, the participants were able to produce creative videos lasting 45–60 seconds. Although the judges selected only the top three winners, all the entries demonstrated that these young people are ready to become reliable Christian content creators. They are ready to be the salt and light in the dynamic and fast-paced online world.
