LAI National Children’s Jamboree: Solo Cultural and Talent Evening

Why won’t Mary play with us anymore? What’s the matter with Mary? Her friends asked. Lately, Mary had been quiet and was rarely seen playing. So her friends were busy speculating. Finally, Mary replied that she was busy working and saving money. Not for treats, nor for a day out. The money she was saving was to buy a book. A book that tells the story of a Saviour who was willing to sacrifice Himself for those He loved. The book is called the Bible. After saving for five years and finally raising the money, Mary willingly walked 40 km from her home village to buy the Bible. 

The story of Mary’s struggle—or, to be precise, Mary Jones’s—is beautifully told in two different styles: the dance drama *Mary Jones* and the children’s *Ketoprak* performance titled *Mary Jones*. Children from Pangudi Luhur Primary School and GKJ Nusukan presented it beautifully during the Cultural Evening and Talent Show at the 2023 National Children’s Jamboree. This is another version—one so closely tied to the culture of the archipelago, particularly Java—which shows that the longing to own a Bible, and ultimately the longing to find God and walk in truth, resides in the hearts of many children across the world, including in Indonesia. 

In addition to the story of Mary Jones, the young participants of the 2023 National Children’s Jamboree, hailing from various regions across the archipelago, showcased their very best skills and talents. There were hymns, dances, ballet, piano performances, and even a sermon in English. It was remarkable to see just how rich the talents of the Jamboree participants were. Through the Cultural Evening and Talent Show, all participants were invited to share with one another and learn that the culture of the archipelago is so rich, and that all these talents can be cultivated and honed to serve and glorify the name of God. 

Two and a half hours seemed all too short, as there were still many young participants who wanted to perform; however, due to time constraints, they may have to wait for another opportunity. As the participants returned to their respective rooms that evening, a sense of pride may have welled up in their hearts; Indonesia is indeed incredibly rich. How wonderful it would be if every talent we possess could be used to glorify the name of God. And our God is truly extraordinary. He does not regard one culture or one talent as superior to another. He accepts all the offerings of His children, given with complete sincerity and joy. For Jesus Christ, our Lord, loves all cultures. Christ loves all nations.
