Humans are such fragile creatures. We are easily swayed by various situations that make us fall into trials and challenges of life. In fact, it is not uncommon for this to happen because of our ego or arrogance. Feeling that we are the most correct and demanding that everyone follow our opinion. This often leads us to a perspective that lacks empathy for the various voices and different situations that people around us have. This is what is reflected in Bildad's opinion in our reading this time.
In his last speech, Bildad presents a portrait of God who is great and untouchable. He describes God as the ruler of the heavenly host, where even the moon and stars are considered unclean before Him. Under the light of that glory, humans are nothing more than lowly creatures - maggots and worms. At first glance, this statement seems cruel. However, theologically, Bildad is not entirely wrong. He voices a reality, that humans cannot justify themselves before God. Unfortunately, Bildad only stops at this understanding, so that it brings fear, not hope.
Job also replied bitterly. He criticized Bildad for only being able to offer wisdom without empathy. “How good is your help to the helpless,” he quipped. Here, Job opens an important space for all of us, that understanding the greatness of God should lead us to humility, not spiritual arrogance.
Bible friends, today's world is slowly shaping humans to compete for a place to be the center of the universe, where validation is sought more than divine truth. So, who are humans before God? Indeed, we are creations who, although bestowed with various blessings, are still small among this vast universe. Therefore, learn to be humble. Be it before God or fellow human beings. Arrogance only leads us to destruction, but by honing empathy, it will present the possibility of unlimited brotherhood with others.
