Fear is often created in our minds. Whether it is in the form of imagination or based on real experiences that have occurred. It is part of the conscious mechanism of our mind to create awareness of various threats that come in life. Often the fear is so dominating that it makes us helpless to live life. So self-control is needed to prevent this balanced with awareness of the dangers that may be in front of our eyes.
When God finally answered Job's complaints, He did so by utilizing various imagery that He could understand. It was part of God's way of reaching Job's understanding as a human being filled with various limitations including in embracing God's infinite purposes. God showed His omnipotence through the various descriptions of objects in the universe that He created. He continues His message by bringing the mythological animals, Behemoth and Leviathan on the stage of conversation.
Both are portrayed as destructive forces that humans cannot conquer. Our passage is a continuation of Leviathan's terrifying portrayal. The animal cannot be defeated by anyone. The limbs, the extremely hard scales covering its body, the broad snout with large and small sharp teeth are terrifying. Its body was protected like a garment of iron chains, its back seemed to be covered with small shields arranged tightly in such a way as to cover the entire body. As if the horror wasn't enough to describe, the description of Leviathan was supplemented with descriptions of its ability to start fires, emit hot vapors, and so on. Who wouldn't be scared to death in the face of such awesome power?"
Friends of the Bible, when God gave us such horrific descriptions of Behemoth and Leviathan He did not intend to frighten us. God wanted to show us His omnipotence as well as build our humility. He wants to show us that there are many things that humans cannot fully control. Fear may arise from the realization that there are many things that we cannot fully understand and predict, but let us not be overcome by it because no matter what happens God can always be the one we lean on.
