God is my Strength

Have you ever been at the lowest point of life? Like someone stuck in a dark alley with no idea where it ends. There is no way out, and no one hears your screams. In such circumstances, many people can only pray. This is what the psalmist also experienced as told in chapter 18.

The psalm begins with a declaration of faith, "I love you, O Lord, my strength!". The word "love" here uses the Hebrew word רָחַם "racham," which in its intensive form describes a love that is tender, deep, and full of emotion. This word is usually used to describe God's love for man. The psalmist displays the deepest expression of personal experience born out of the realization of God's saving work. He refers to God with eight metaphors at once: rock, stronghold, savior, rock, refuge, shield, horn of salvation, and fortress city. Each of these metaphors reflects the saving, sustaining, and protecting character of God.

The dangers experienced by the Psalmist are described with metaphorical expressions, including "snares of death", "floods of destruction", "cords of the dead" and "death traps". These phrases do not merely describe physical threats, but also psychological and spiritual pressures that crush the soul. Under such circumstances, the Psalmist did not run away, but cried out to God. God's response to his cry is described in apocalyptic style: the earth shakes, smoke and fire come out of God, the heavens are subdued, and God rides on cherubim. All this suggests that salvation is not an ordinary event, but a divine intervention involving the entire cosmos.

Friends of the Bible, Psalm 18:1–11 is a cry of faith that transcends all ages. It is a declaration of love, a cry of hope, and a celebration of salvation. It is an honest liturgy of love, a radical cry of hope, and a testimony of God acting in the real world. In an age that is often plagued by darkness and despair, perhaps the conviction of faith above is what we really need. Life is often hard but through an honest call to Him, we are anchored in the right place.
